Reach Forklift Interactive Thorough Examination Guide

LOLER 1998, which covers lifting equipment, and PUWER 1998, which deals with other components such as brakes, steering and tyres, are comprehensive checks that are only all covered by CFTS-approved Thorough Examinations, which offer the best way to ensure that the safety of all of your reach forklift operators is comprehensively covered.

1 Forks

Fork arms are inspected for any signs of stress or abrasions that can weaken the structure, and the condition of the forks are compared to the standards set out in ISO 5057. Fork locations and end stops are also checked.
2 Attachments | Side Shift (If Fitted)

Any permanently fitted attachments or sideshifts are checked for smooth movements throughout the full range of motion. Any attachments that can be removed must have full examinations twice a year.
3 Carriage

Fork arm carriers are inspected for signs of distortion or cracks and load rest extensions must be securely mounted.
4 Load Guard

Load guards are checked for a strong, secure mounting.
5 Tilt Mechanism

The tilt mechanism is checked to ensure an even, controlled movement. Damage and scoring are checked for, which can be symptomatic of a much bigger problem.
6 Hydraulic System

Hoses, pipes, cylinders and reservoirs are checked on the hydraulic system for any signs of damage, and the filters are looked over for dust or debris that may impede their functioning correctly. Finally, a prolonged load test is carried out to check for an acceptable descent.
7 Rating Plate

Rating plates must be securely attached, legible and displaying all up-to-date information on attachments or sideshifts.
8 Mast & Reach Carriage

The mast and reach carrier is tested for a smooth range of motion and ability to fully extend.
9 Chains

Elongation and corrosion are looked for in three separate places as a decline in condition as small as 2% can be lethal. The condition of the anchors and pulleys are also inspected.

1 Overhead Guard or Cab

Overhead guards and cabs are checked for signs of damage that can indicate a structural problem. The mounting of the guard or cab is checked for strength, and the cab is checked for finger guards to prevent injuries.
2 Steering

Mechanical and hydraulic steering parts are checked for signs of damage or corrosion and a maneuver is performed at a low speed to check steering responses.
3 Safety Systems

Audible and visible alarms are checked to be functioning, as well as any interlocks or seat restraints that may be present. Capacity and data plates are checked to be present, legible and securely attached.
4 Seat Restraint

Any operator restraint, such as a seat belt or harness, is checked to be fully functional and free from damage.
5 Seat Mountings

Seat mountings are checked to see if they are securely attached, and the panel they are attached to is inspected for any signs of damage or weakness. If there is any anti-vibration mechanism present, the condition of that is also noted.
6 Structural Fastenings

Any structural fastening for an important component such as axles, fluid reservoirs or batteries is verified to be in good condition, free from damage and securely attached.
7 Traction Systems

The gearbox and drive motor are checked for a smooth acceleration and careful control over speed.
8 Wheels & Brakes

Your wheels will be inspected for a good, strong fitting, with bearings in particular being a crucial element. Service and parking brakes will also be inspected, with hydraulics, pneumatics, mountings, pedals, levers and linkages being thoroughly checked for signs of damage or wear that can prevent them from functioning as they should.
9 Tyres

Tyres will be checked for a correct fitting, amount of wear, damage and any bondage issues that can prevent them providing enough grip.
10 Chassis

The chassis will be checked for any signs of damage, with special attention paid to the welds.
